You should have checked it again before the update is completely downloaded.
The reproduction steps are -
When there is a new version - that was not downloaded yet - you go to the
about box,
click on "Update now", close the about box, reopen the about box -
the "Checking for
updates" message stalls.
Definitely still happening.
