I was thinking about this and decided one easy workaround that would fix my  
first
bullet point as well as #9 (but is not a great solution generally) is that  
we could
avoid updating the PRIMARY selection after a new page loads until there is  
some user
event observed on the page. Then just navigating could never mess with your  
selection.
