After playing around a bit more I've discovered a reliable way to reproduce this issue which characterises it somewhat differently. 1. Create a new tab 2. Type in the URL to any website (e.g. http://www.delta.com) 3. Press enter then quickly change back to another open tab in the same window before the page begins rendering 4. Switch back to the new tab - notice that the page has rendered blank.
