I'm pretty sure that this is intentional in Firefox, and we should do the
same thing.
Try left-clicking in the omnibox between the triple-click and the
middle-click -- the
text is pasted then. ("Preserve the previous PRIMARY selection even when
text gets
unhighlighted" behavior predates GTK, I think -- this is how things work in
xterm or
any other terminal emulator, and it's a useful feature, in my opinion.)
Experimenting with this a bit more, it looks like pasting while omnibox
text is
already highlighted works unless the highlighting extends all the way to
the end of
the text. For example, middle-click pastes when the following text is
highlighted:
http://www.google.*com*/
but not when it's like this:
http://www.google.*com/*
