The same thing happens with me on Windows XP 2002. Just started having
problems with
Chrome recently.
Here are the commandlines of the orphaned processes (if that helps):

"E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" "http://mail.google.com/mail/";

"E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --lang=en-US --plugin-data-
dir="E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default" --type=plugin
--channel=2168.2d88008.62682108 -
-plugin-path="E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\2.0.172.43\gears.dll"

"E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --lang=en-US --plugin-data-
dir="E:\Documents and Settings\timmy\Local Settings\Application
