There is an alternate way for this problem in firefox/mozilla: you can simply paste the url anywhere on the currently active tab. (So you just click middle button anywhere in the viewport, and the url is replaced.) I miss this feature badly in Chrome, and would be nice to be implemented by the stable release. I know it's a different bug, but these two are highly related. IMHO, highlighting the whole url just by clicking in the omnibox is the worst solution on linux.
