I have written code to implement this. Will upload momentarily.

Regarding the original bug, with my change in place the search box on  
www.apple.com
still renders with a grey background, obscuring the "Search" placeholder  
text,
however this seems to be a correct rendering of the css served AFAICT,  
using the
element inspector & reading through the source pages.

I have also set Firefox to use the current Chrome User-agent and it then  
has the same
symptoms (modulo no rounded borders) -- see screen shot.
