I would worry that there will be compatibility problems between versions.  
Gears will
have to function as an extra web display engine for non-tech-embracing  
browsers such as
IE 6, 7, Firefox 3.0, and then it can fade away as those technologies  
disappear. Gears
will also have to defend itself when on those browsers. That smells like a  
big uh-Oh in
the making, as corporate users start using offline Gmail...
