finally I was able to write a test case to repro this. As Ananta noted,
it's related
to the sudden termination of renderers which now happens on tab close. The
crash I got
was the same as this, so now I'm mostly confident that it'll fix the
crashes. I'll
clean up the test case and send it out for review.
