Yes, I agree that one should use animations conservatively. The point is that there are ways of animating the icon using the canvas element. If canvas transformations are to be allowed then I think gifs should be too. Otherwise you'd just have to do a bunch of ugly wait-and-change-frame-manually code to achieve the same result.
