Comment #19 on issue 23778 by Robert.Bradbury: Chrome fails to collect
defunct/zombie processes remaining from closed tabs/windows.
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=23778
The Bug still exists circa Nov. 17, chrome version 4.0.248.0 (32003). If
left alone
with a number of open tabs for a weekend defunct processes will accumulate
(hundreds)
to the point where the entire gnome session becomes unusable (i.e. one
cannot even
open a terminal session). One has to kill the chrome master process (which
effectively kills all the children and collects the zombies) and restart
chrome to
work around the problem.
I will probably test chrome 4.0.251.0 (32167) which is the latest Gentoo
version
later today. I have looked at the chrome continuous build directories and
there
doesn't appear to be a way to equate the build dates with the chrome
version numbers
of running versions ("About Chromium"). If there is a URL someplace which
documents
that I would like to know about it. It would be a needless time waster to
attempt to
download the latest chromium build if it is no different from the one I've
already
installed from Gentoo. Gentoo does appear to be generating nearly weekly
updates so
I presume they are following the continuous builds fairly closely.
It may be helpful to note that I usually run gmail in one tab and leave it
open. I
don't know if that may be spawning/destroying extra threads/processes but
it does
seem to have some active background activity (reloading the inbox, updating
the chat
list, etc.).
