Same issue.  The first character after the <?xml?> will throw error: char  
0x0 out of
allowed range.  Doesn't matter what the char is.

Related: XmlHTTPrequest responseXML is null, even if responseText contains  
valid XML.

Looks broken in Chrome/4.0.279.0
Works in Chrome Beta Chrome/4.0.249.43
