@thestig: IMHO the OOM killer taking out background Chrome tabs could be a  
good thing
since I understand Chrome recovers quite well from tab processes being  
killed.

@craig: ulimit -e says "20", and the Ubuntu kernel source seems to look a  
lot like
the above.

One way of testing is just to try it and see if it works, for example the  
attached
script (although you'd probably want to re-implement this in C or only run  
it after
startup as this script takes 30ms to run on a Core2Duo.) The benefit of  
this approach
is that it would also be accurate on distros that configured this ability  
in a
different way.
