Any news on this feature? Allowing animated gifs makes a lot of sense to me

especially for an extension specific loading spinner.
If a developer thinks that a constantly animated browser/page action is a
good
extension UI, let them do it. It'll either drive users away or it really is
appropriate
for the extension.
