This occurs for me in chrome version 4.0.295.0 in 'dev' and 'beta' version (trying everything). I have never been able to see checkboxes when using Chrome (e.g., Pubmed site, Gmail, etc.). I have been able to get them to reappear if I open Internet Explorer (ewwww) but only for the specific tab open. As soon as I open another tab, they're gone. Some of the time, I can guess where the box was supposed to appear and check that, but much of the time I just have to use Firefox instead. Please, please,
