I thought this could be http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=9258, but bug 9258 doesn't affect just the first tab, and also can't explain the problem of Outlook freezing at the same time. In any case, bug 9258 has been fixed in the current Dev channel release and will be fixed in the next Beta channel release (expected this week).
