I tried measuring those today. On a athlon 64 laptop running ubuntu 9.04 32 bit, I uninstalled tracker (since it chews cpu time) wrote a script to run startup_tests with and without zygote mode, and ran it both after a normal boot and after a boot with mem=256M appended to the kernel commandline. I waited after login until the load average went down to 0.5 before starting. Scripts and data are at http://kegel.com/chromium/bench.tgz Executive summary: zygote mode seems to be slightly faster. Letting the test run overnight might yield more conclusive results, but I'm not sure it's worth it. (Caveat: I don't really know what the startup_tests results represent, I'm just blindly crunching the numbers that came out of it.) Here are some statistics on the startup time results under the four conditions. (n is for normal, z is for zygote.) :::::::::::::: 1.5g/startup-1.nlog.sum :::::::::::::: median mean max stddev warm: t= 433 606 3647 717 cold: t= 1678 1684 1852 56 warm: t_ref= 314 517 2735 539 new_tab: 1744 1731 2234 333 :::::::::::::: 1.5g/startup-1.zlog.sum :::::::::::::: median mean max stddev warm: t= 424 593 3550 697 cold: t= 1664 1671 1832 49 warm: t_ref= 313 435 2559 503 new_tab: 1611 1605 1943 266 :::::::::::::: 256mb/startup-1.nlog.sum :::::::::::::: median mean max stddev warm: t= 790 927 3548 617 cold: t= 1537 1580 1777 97 warm: t_ref= 348 474 2623 508 new_tab: 1622 1663 2619 612 :::::::::::::: 256mb/startup-1.zlog.sum :::::::::::::: median mean max stddev warm: t= 783 941 3659 641 cold: t= 1529 1565 1704 78 warm: t_ref= 352 476 2571 495 new_tab: 996 1217 2050 468 --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Chromium Developers mailing list: [email protected] View archives, change email options, or unsubscribe: http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-dev -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
