I'm not 100% certain what you are referring to in number 2, but you
can make the bookmarks bar always visible.  CTRL-B does the trick.

Then, if you just want a bunch of buttons, you can delete the names of
each bookmark, leaving only the favicon to show (for sites whose icons
are easily recognizable.)  For this reason, I wish Google News'
favicon would switch back to what it used to be.  At the moment, it
cannot be distinguished from, say, iGoogle.
