One of the really nice things about Metalink is that it can be used in the background, transparently, w/o the person downloading even knowing.
Metalink isn't AS useful for small files, but it adds a feature set to browsers and download agents that are needed. It's a small investment for continual gains later. It gives you a kind of safety net to easily recover from things like servers going down or errors in the file. Also, it really helps people with unreliable internet connections. Being able to automatically recover from errors in a 3 gig download when you've got a spotty connection in the Philippines saves a lot of time.
