Dear developers and others interested I am currently working on an eID related project.
A short preamble: The intention is to distribute eIDs in the form of standardized x509 certificates on ECC standardized smartcards (ISO 7816, ISO 24727, CEN TS 15480) to every citizen in Iceland. For the first years of this project, the smartcards will also carry a magstripe and the EMV application to carry out financial transactions. In other words, the cards are debitcards. Citizens will be able to use the certificates for authentication against any web service which accepts the certificates and trusts the issuers. Furthermore, as the certificates are Qualified in the sense of EU directives and Icelandic law, citizens can use them for non- repudiation digital signatures The project is done in co-operation of all Icelandic banks and the Icelandic Government. The aim is to build a completely open and standardized PKI infrastructure, validation will e.g. be in the form of open OCSP / CRL for any domestic / foreign party. Over the past 3 years we have carried out extensive tests with different browsers to research the qualities of each browser. there are several issues which need attention, examples: 1. usability, user-friendly 2. security (application logout, smartcard removal etc.) 3. performance It seems that the current version of Chrome does not support client certificate authentication. On behalf of Audkenni Technical Committee, which is responsible for technical issues in this project, I would kindly like to ask if Chrome has any intention to offer this functionality in the future. Also I would like to offer the Chrome team a detailed description of our use cases, problem statements, workarounds & fixes and of course ... current and expected future requirements. We are working closely with various EU eID workgroups, IDABC et al, and also actively participating in the EU STORK pilot. Our experience indicates that that countries dealing with x509 on smartcards would be very grateful for a browser which would meet their highest expectations.
