Not sure if this is related... but it MIGHT be worth noting that I got this error about an hour before the chaos began:
Event Type: Information Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 11724 Date: 9/25/2008 Time: 5:09:39 PM User: CEN\SORED Computer: CENSORED Description: Product: Google Gears -- Removal completed successfully. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 7b 35 35 32 31 37 31 42 {552171B 0008: 43 2d 33 30 46 38 2d 33 C-30F8-3 0010: 42 32 39 2d 39 43 34 46 B29-9C4F 0018: 2d 45 33 46 45 35 39 30 -E3FE590 0020: 42 37 43 41 43 7d B7CAC} I didn't initiate anything which should have removed Google Gears, so I am assuming this may have been a part of an auto-update to Gears? About an hour later, I got: Event Type: Information Event Source: Chrome Event Category: None Event ID: 2 Date: 9/25/2008 Time: 6:58:22 PM User: CEN\SORED Computer: CENSORED Description: The description for Event ID ( 2 ) in Source ( Chrome ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Chrome. Crash uploaded. Id=bcd6da96603e14e1. So, it looks like it successfully uploaded the crash... this kept happening (because I kept loading up the browser and trying again, thinking maybe it was just the site I was on that was crashing it)... when it started happening for every site, I started using a Chromium build. At about 7:03 pm (after about 5 crashes in a row), it stopped uploading the crash reports it seems.
