Not sure if this is related... but it MIGHT be worth noting that I got
this error about an hour before the chaos began:

I didn't initiate anything which should have removed Google Gears, so
I am assuming this may have been a part of an auto-update to Gears?
About an hour later, I got:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Chrome
Event Category: None

Description:
The description for Event ID ( 2 ) in Source ( Chrome ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following
information is part of the event: Chrome. Crash uploaded.
Id=bcd6da96603e14e1.

So, it looks like it successfully uploaded the crash... this kept
happening (because I kept loading up the browser and trying again,
thinking maybe it was just the site I was on that was crashing it)...
when it started happening for every site, I started using a Chromium
build. At about 7:03 pm (after about 5 crashes in a row), it stopped
uploading the crash reports it seems.
