This, I think, was inherited from Safari. I remember the first time I used Safari I thought it was a crappy browser until somebody told me I must click and hold to see the browser history. At the end of the day it's something that users will eventually get used do as they get "coached". I prefer the Chrome/Safari way, because it removes unnecessary clutter. The simpler, the better, the faster. That is what I believe in.
