Perhaps a key board shortcut could work for this. You could select a non-hyperlinked URL and press cntrl + shift + t and it would open a new tab with that URL. Reason I suggest adding another key is to prevent accidental opening of a selected URL in text the user has selected when they just want a blank new tab.
