Maybe using a new color was the wrong approach for this, have you considered simply italicizing the title of a tab that hasn't been looked at yet? (assuming that that's simple to do) That would serve it's purpose of letting the user know they haven't looked at that tab yet, and won't be as attention-grabby as the yellow tabs. But it could suffer the opposite problem of not making unread tabs distinguishable enough.
