Your mention of colour depth has reminded me of an altered nVidia colour quality settings (from high to medium). The correlation was not immediately obviously since I had altered it from a primary monitor, and not a secondary (which is used from browsing) and that only Chrome was affected. Readjusting this setting has fixed the problem, for me at least.
