First up you won't know this (because you can't see the start page)
but the Chromium Linux devs don't want people reporting bugs and
blogging about it yet :-).

However I had a similar problem on my Ubuntu 8.04 install and after
reading the bug report over on 
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=6447
(surprisingly hard to find using the bug search option) I learned that
you need the MS corefonts installed. Installing the msttcorefonts
package should allow you to at least see the warning message.
