Since these are like two different applications (Google Chrome and
Chromium), you can have them side by side, simply execute the downloaded
Chromium binary.
There is no official automatic way, or a fully automated way.
There is, however, a Chromium Updater, which is semi automatic -
http://forums.tlokzz.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3.
It is a Windows only tool, I am not sure you are on Windows.
(All of this information is regarding Windows, do not know about Linux\Mac)
