You don't have to open the link in a new tab... you could:

1. right-click to "Copy Link Address"
2. Ctrl-D to create a bookmark
3. Click on the "Edit..." button
4. Change the name of the bookmark and paste the copied link address
to the URL: entry box

Subject: Feature Request: "Bookmark this link"
To: Chromium-discuss

I would be very grateful if chromium had this feature.
I'm always bookmarking links that I want to see later, but as it is
now I have to open it up in a new tab, go to that tab, bookmark it,
and then close tab. Being able to just right-click on a link and
"bookmark this link" would more than halve the time it takes to
bookmark something.

*Sorry if this was already mentioned, I looked and couldn't find it.
