I also am almost certain that copying and pasting images in gmail has
never worked. You can copy by highlighting the image, copying, and
pasting it in, but that's different. When you click "copy image", it's
copying the actual image data to the clipboard. When you highlight and
copy, you're copying the HTML code that generated that image (the
<img> tag). So when you paste an image like that in email, it's still
being hosted on the original server.
