PhistucK, it would seem to be the case that Gears is indeed supported on
(32-bit) Linux, but not on 64-bit Linux, at least according to the system
requirements published on «http://gears.google.com/» :

«What does Google Gears require to be compatible with my Linux system?

<javascript:window.print();>
 If you'd like to run the Google Gears for Firefox on a Linux (32-bit)
platform, please make sure your system has glibc 2.3.5 or higher and
libstdc++6 (Gears 0.3) or libstdc++5 (Gears pre-0.3).»

But as you indicate, it seems likely that Gears will be abandoned in favour
of HTML5. We shall have to see whether this will resolve the «Offline»
issue, or whether, with the increasing prevalence of so-called broadband
connexions, interest in this issue will disappear....
