I agree with you about adding extension instead of hardcoded feature,
but actually the breadcrumb menu is a little different from sitemap,
because site map has no information about previous and next page, and
also website owner can customize has breadcrumb for different kinds of
navigation,

for example:

Home>Products>Electronics>TVs>LCD TVs>High Definition TVs>Toshiba

User can customize this current page breadcrumbs as follows:

(Previous: TVs) (Current: Toshiba)  (Next: Sony) ...
and so on.
