There's already quite a few extensions for some kind of integration with GoogleReader, but as far as I know, the one that I've created is the most complete one. It helps both with subscribing and reading feeds. Even if you are using one of the other GR extensions, you might want to check it out.
Let me mention just one feature, the key feature, I'd say: when the extension is switched to "automatic mode" (switch it by a checkbox on the toolstrip), it just opens new items in background tabs of the browser and marks them as read in Google Reader. In this way, Chrome becomes the real interface to the feed reader and you don't have to visit the Reader's page at all. (There's also manual mode where it just shows unread count, and opens first unread item (and marks it as read in GR) upon clicking.)
