I think what Aaron was suggesting is that an option for you is to build the list into your extension. That way you can release updates to the list by just using auto-updates of your extension. This is different from the model of subscribing to a third party list, but might work depending on what you want to achieve. To make it possible to subscribe to third party lists, you'd need to do something like the following:
