Note that LocalStorage is not planned to be included in Chrome 3, only in later versions (see Web Platform Status<http://dev.chromium.org/developers/web-platform-status> ).So if you plan of releasing it for Chrome 3 (which does include preliminary extensions support), do not count on LocalStorage for storing data.
