Errata to the options.html sample above: I was mistaken about how long the localStorage values last if you load and reload extensions. Using the "Reload" button causes the extension id to change and it seems the localStorage values goes out of scope because of that. Loading an unpacked extension seems to work, so long as it's the same extension Id.
