I'm not sure what you mean by without CORS. The XMLHttpRequest API can issue cross-site GET and POST requests, but the page can read back the response only if the server opts in. The requests should be sent with cookies. In any case, speculating on the mailing list probably isn't that productive. Looking at a test case in a bug is likely to be more helpful.
