I see. Yeah, a sourceTabId would be nice in the onTabCreated event for this, but there isn't one. Another approach (one that involves more effort) is to instrument pages with click event listeners. If a hyperlink is clicked shortly followed by a tab open event, assume they are related? Dirty, I know.
