The external_extensions.json should work in mac, just create the file
in ~/Library/Application Support/Chromium/Default/extensions . I
however didn't try it myself, but as far as I know there is no reason
for it to not work. (And the directory for linux should be ~/.config/
chromium/Default/Extensions)
