The IP address hosts thousands of other sites. If the registrar or
DNS/web hosting company had the right to sell the domain, I think they
would make it obvious. If it's set to be automatically renewed, they
probably wouldn't want to be drawing the customer's attention to it. 

It doesn't matter. I already registered chrony-project.org. It's good
enough.
