Dear Folks,

I have written much on this issue in the past and can write more. I think
there is something to the thesis proposed here. I suggest the writer read:
Anthony Storr's article "Churchill Black Dog". I have a copy I can share
with anyone who would like to see a copy as an attachment.

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Churchill's Depression

Hi, just wondered if anyone else here agrees with the idea that
Churchill's "black dog" depression was actually his inspiration, the
thing which gave him the ability to speak so powerfully to the nation,
and to soldier on when many people would've given up??

I firmly believe in this. I wasn't born until long after he died, yet
when I heard a recording of his speech "we will fight in the hills" -
I could hear all that in his voice!!! In the intonation, the way he
projected calmness into his voice. He was talking to the nation in the
same way that he spoke to himself, to calm himself during depression.

The nation was going through hell, but Churchill's words were "If you
find yourself going through hell, keep going!" This can only have been
learned from doing battle with an inner demon, a personal hell from
which there was no escape, other than to battle it with psychological
techniques. The bombs had flown over Churchill's heart many times
before they ever flew over anyone else. The doom clouds had gathered
many times above his head, long before war was declared!

The reason that I can relate so well is because I have a biological
mood disorder too - Social Phobia - and that works in a very similar
way. I used to feel so guilty for having such negative feelings for no
reason - but just look what Churchill's mood disorder has acheived!!!
It has in fact saved all the lives of our nation. Every person here
today owes their life to such a thing!!!!!! God Bless Churchill and
his black dog !!!!!!!
