I did not dislike The Gathering Storm, and thought Vanessa Redgrave's the better of the two productions' Clementines, but otherwise I thought Wilderness Years with Robert Hardy head and shoulders over Gathering Storm, and not simply because it had considerably more time in which to lay out the events of those years. It was so good I still resent it ending when it did, on September 3, 1939 (I think it was the 3rd) when Chamberlain asked Churchill to serve as First Lord of the Admiralty. I think the series should have had two more hours, the first to cover the "phoney war" period through the German invasion of Denmark and Norway in April 1940, including Britain's ill-fated Narvik expedition, and the second through the German offensive on the Western Front to the point when he's called to Buckingham Palace after the House of Commons rose against Chamberlain. (And maybe through the John Lukacs Five Days in London, May 1940 events as well.)
