John Martin, in his note home, did not specify which Pitt. Nor did he give the source of the quote. In those days, there was no need. By the way, there are statues of both Pitts in the Guildhall, in the company of Nelson, Wellington and Winston Churchill. The text on the monument to Chatham, excecuted in 1782, was written by Burke.
