Bill Loytty,

Thankyou for reminding ChurchillChat about this magnificent speech.

“UNTIL VICTORY IS WON” is an immortal speech often overlooked. In his
memoirs, Oliver Lyttelton in The Memoirs of Lord Chandos described it as
‘among the highest flights in oratory.’ No-one can disagree. Britain had
been ‘alone’ for a full year, yet WSC had the sublime confidence to end this
superb peroration with:

Lift up your hearts. All will come right. Out of the depths of sorrow and
sacrifice will be born again the glory of mankind.

The text you have used from the British Library of Information differs
slightly from the text in Complete Speeches. For the record, the full text
of this magnificent speech (Unrelenting Struggle Little, Brown 161-64, and
Cassell 169-72) is attached to this email.

Winston’s ‘sublime confidence’ was rewarded 10 days later with Hitler’s
assault on Russia, but he had to wait another five months for Pearl Harbor.

Jim Lancaster
