Occasionally, we have gotten into heated discussions on this list for someone
invoking Churchill in support of a current political position, be it Iraq,
Iran, taxes, socialism, the welfare state, etc.

Now, here ini America, there is a minor uproar because President Obama made
reference to Churchill in the ongoing water boarding debate. The President
referenced Churchill stating during the Battle of Britain that the British "do
not torture." This has lead to everyone it seems from politically neutral
sites to right wing blogs to the Guardian stating that yes Britain did torture
from the Mau Mau rebellion to the American Revolution, to an MI-5 officer who
may or may not have been rouge torturing German prisoners as late as 1948.

It is getting especially heated given that President Obama returned a Churchill
bust that was loaned to President Bush.

So here is my idea. Let us push for a moratorium on politicians and pundits
invoking Churchill for anything other than a glass of champagne and a cigar
after dinner. This will allow us to focus on more important political matters,
namely taking everything everyone says wildly out of context and yelling
shrilly at the tops of our lungs.

After enjoying a glass of champagne and a cigar of course.

"Towards the government I feel no scruples and would dodge paying the tax if I
could. Yet I would give my life for England readily enough, if I thought it
necessary. No one is patriotic about taxes." -- George Orwell, Wartime Diary,
