Indeed. Beside the point now, but Anthony refers to 1987, when Mr.
Sullivan attended the Dallas Churchill conference, oiling his way
around and making polite conversation, then writing a snide polemic in
The New Republic about our “Churchill Envy...as the damp seam of
detente spreads throughout the Reagan Administration.” (Huh?) We
reprinted it, footnoting twenty-four "terminological
inexactitudes" (Finest Hour 58, Winter 1987-88: 16-18). Along came
9/11, and Andrew waxed all Land of Hope and Gloryish: “Churchill,
partly American himself, articulated [the Anglo-American Union] now
coming to pass." (Say what?) "When The Queen ordered the band to play
‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ at the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham
Palace for the first time in history, I doubt I was the only one
watching through tears.” Now there’s a fellow who knows how to write
for the market.
