During this month I have heard extracts of Churchill speeches used
twice during the "Issues of the Day" on Germany's WDR5 radio station.

First, on 9 May, “Europe Day” was an extract of a speech in French
during the Council of Europe. Second, yesterday, was an extract of a
speech in English where Churchill states the future of Europe lies in
the strong bond between Germany and France. The presenter stated that
the vision Churchill had for a united Europe as expressed at the
Council of Europe was finally becoming a reality. The collapse of the
Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany enabled the full
European family to come together. June 4 -7 will be the first
European Parliament election where all 27 nations will vote.

Finally, Last Saturday was the 60th Anniversary of the Federal
Republic of Germany and here in Bonn many of the former governmental
building were open to the public for the first time – usually, you
need to be part of a structured tour. The Palais Schamburg was open
and I was able to see Dr. Adenauer’s office. Clearly visible on the
credenza behind the desk was an 8x10 photo of Churchill (Vivienne of
London) inscribed: To Dr Adenauer | with all good wishes | from |
Winston S. Churchill | the photo is dated 1953 when Dr. Adenauer was
reelected to a second term as Chancellor and Churchill was in his
second term as Prime Minister.
