Whilst researching Churchill for a new book I recently published I came across a small memo written by Churchill and tucked away at the back of his WW2 memoirs. By publishing it he clearly intended to show himself to be less colour prejudiced than the norm in 1948.
I used the memo in a chapter of my new book “ Churchill’s Secret Skills” detailing Churchill’s attempts to promote a meritocratic approach to appointments in the armed forces. The memo gives a clear indication that Churchill would have probably liked Obama. Whilst it is useless to try and guess what a person who died in 1965 might have thought of Obama, the memo allows for some positive speculation. It is based on the premise that I believe Churchill tried his best to instil the principle of a meritocracy in the armed forces. The explanation is a bit too long winded for a blog post so I have put the Chapter from my book in the files section, where I build my case. With the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings coming up in a week’s time and Obama going to France and Germany to attend, I thought you might find the premise interesting.
