Colleagues:

According to John Keay's 2000 book The Great Arc about the mapping of India and
the naming of Mount Everest, the correct pronunciation of the world's highest
point is "EVE-rest" as in Christmas Eve and not "EV-rest" with a silent middle
e.  The mountain is named for the Surveyor-General George Everest, although he
never laid eyes on the peak.  Apprantly the staff at the Survey of India
offices are sticklers for the correct pronunciation.

With that said, can anyone out there confirm the correct pronuniciation of the
name of Winston Churchill's nanny Mrs. Everest, his beloved "Woomany"?

Just think: the results of some yet-to-be-played ultimate trivia contest could
hinge on the answer.
