Or, an entire signed set...which I have, thanks to the fact that Sir Martin was our guest 9 years ago when my university (George Washington) gave him an honorary degree. He signed every one of his Churchill books and I've got photos of him doing so. At that point, he lacked a copy of Companion V:3 himself! I've seen that volume--often not signed--going for upwards of $2,500. It will surely retain some higher value as a first (and for nearly 30 years, only) edition...but thanks to the new printing, anyone can have the invaluable information.

Hillsdale is providing a wonderful service to all of us who love Churchill and who are appreciative of the scholarship that has gone into these volumes. I had the privilege of meeting Sir Martin Gilbert in New York just after the publication of the Churchill in America volume. I took my copy of Volume five of the biography with me to have him sign it which he graciously did. In the line in front of me was a gentleman who had all three of the companion volumes which Sir Martin signed for him. I can only imagine what signed copies of the original companion volumes are worth! I got mine this past Friday. It's kind of surreal to be honest. Last year, I was doing some research on Churchill before World War II and I tried to get these books through an interlibrary loan. The first two companions were fairly simple. The third companion took months. Many book catalogs have the ISBN listing Volume V and not it's third companion. After numerous attempts, my librarian was diligent enough to keep trying until we got the right book. When I finally got it, I had only three weeks to digest it before it was due. I'm glad I finally have these in my library.
