My family and I spent Halloween at Blenheim Palace and learned something new
today about Mr. Churchill. Apparently, the room when WSC was born is
supposedly haunted by the ghost of Dean Jones, who was the personal chaplin to
the first Duke. According to our tour guide, Churchill used to claim that his
birth scared the ghost of Dean Jones away, but the last claimed apparition was
in 1895 [IIRC]. Apparently, after returning from her honeymoon Consuelo
Vanderbilt invited some friends from America to stay at Blenheim. One of her
friends, who did not believe in ghosts, was staying in the room and woke up to
see the face of Dean Jones floating above her. According to house legend, she
screamed so loudly that Dean Jones has not been seen since.
I do not believe a word of it of course, but Happy Halloween everyone.
